If you thought horses might be lacking in that department, well, you haven’t met Justa Bob, just one of a number of memorable equines who compete for attention with Smiley’s human characters – and often come out ahead.īut Horse Heaven isn’t only for readers who grew up praying for a pony for Christmas. And it also has what often separates the victors from the also-rans – plenty of heart. ![]() It has “winner” written all over it, from its bloodlines (Smiley won a Pulitzer for A Thousand Acres), to its pace (fast) and ability to go the distance (considerable). In fact, if this novel were a racehorse, it would be keeping company with Secretariat. ![]() ![]() We’re off to the races with Jane Smiley in Horse Heaven, and it’s one heck of a ride. ![]()
